Chicago 5k Medal

Branding

project brief.

The Chicago Bears work with PNC to host a 5k race that begins in downtown Chicago and finishes on the famous Soldier Field. This event is an exciting opportunity for Bears fans to run onto the same field where their favorite team plays. All participants who cross the finish line are featured on the stadium’s video board, have their photos taken, and receive a medal along with other exclusive race memorabilia.
The ask: The organization wanted to have a new design for the upcoming 2020 Chicago Bears 5k.
The solution: As the lead designer for this project, I aimed to create a fresh, distinctive design inspired by major races like marathons, while showcasing the beauty of Chicago. The medal features iconic city architecture, Soldier Field, and a retro illustration of Staley, the team's mascot. My goal was to give participants a lasting keepsake that celebrates their achievement, the spirit of Chicago, and their passion for the Bears.

Inspiration

This design of the medal included the Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, Brooklyn Bridge, the subway, and the ferry crossing the Hudson River. This medal effectively integrates key elements of the city into its overall design.

This style and attention to detail in the engraving of the architecture is what I used as a reference when working with the production team.

In 2020, just before the race was scheduled to take place, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Despite the challenges, the event successfully transitioned into a virtual race, allowing participants to still take part remotely and receive all the official Chicago Bears swagg. Below are photos shared on social media by finishers celebrating their accomplishment.
